Samantha Luisa Quy (Sam) is a multi-award winning dance artist, tutor and choreographer. Dance expert on BBC Radio 3 Sounds of Dance, with Darcey Bussel and Akram Kahn, Sam is also the flamenco dancer on BBC Strictly Come Dancing. Her professional dance career began in London’s West End at the age of 11 where she went on to perform in productions internationally and at Covent Garden’s Royal Opera House for over a decade. Her screen-work includes BBC Strictly, Campion, Manet, Carmen the film and 3D movie. She choreographed Carmen at Leeds Castle, Royal Opera House Moldova and UK tours.
In 18 years delivering community/ celebrity dance classes and shows, Sam has seen flamenco music and dance engage and bond people from all walks of life. In her experience, the innate passion of flamenco dance has an ability to lift people mentally, work them physically and socialise individuals, including those suffering loneliness and isolation. She has seen this in practice, through evaluations of projects/ classes, reviews of performances and her own community research into wellbeing.
Sam studied under scholarship at RAD, Labán, London Contemporary, La Fundación, Sevilla and graduated with distinction MA Dance Studies, Post Graduate Certificate in Eductaion (PGCE) and Arte Flamenco (Sobresaliente). Her recent CPD in YMCA fitness, Dance for Stroke and Parkinson’s, Psychology, Mental Health, Yoga teaching, Supple Strength, Wellbeing and Exercise Prescription also informs her work. Sam is particularly interested in dance that helps people in terms of learning a new skill, aiding physical and mental wellbeing and combating loneliness.
Sam has been awarded Grade 1, Outstanding Teaching observations in five UK Boroughs. She was given Ascend Tutor of Excellence and HAFLS Excellence in Teaching; won Momentum Dance Artist in Residence for Ealing and was an Ignition Dance Festival commission winner in Hammersmith. She collaborates regularly with a variety of artists and loves to produce exciting events in amazing spaces.
She believes flamenco is a beautiful, adaptable art form to be enjoyed by everyone and welcomes you to her next performance/ class!
