Westminster Library & Barraca Flamenca proudly present: Dances of Spain

Sat 9 July 2016, 3pm

Dances of Spain is a brand new work inspired by the Spanish dance books of the Westminster Reference Library collection. Set against a unique backdrop of bookcases, their seemingly static words are set in motion, as paragraphs become choreography. Words dance and dancers write in a new language to bring texts to life.

In 1931, Spanish dramatist/poet Federico García Lorca created a touring student theatre group called ‘La Barraca’. They toured Spain performing classical plays to the people. Continuing Lorca’s theme, choreographer Sam Quy set up ‘Barraca Flamenca’ with a group of students to perform flamenco dance for audiences in and around London.

Sam Quy is the flamenco dancer from BBC Strictly Come Dancing. She danced in Carmen for a decade at the Royal Opera House London, in the film and 3D movie and Royal Albert Hall. She choreographed Carmen at Leeds Castle, UK tours and Royal Opera House, Moldova.

While studying dance criticism with Donald Hutrera and the English National Ballet, Sam’s first class was held at Westminster library. Here, she met the inspirational library manager Rosella Black who introduced Sam to a section of Spanish dance books and a whole wall of Performing Arts books!

Sam said to Rosella “Wouldn’t it be great to stage some Spanish dance against that backdrop of books on the subject!” To her surprise Rosella replied “Let’s do it!” Back in class Barraca Flamenca agreed! We hope you enjoy!
